Sarasota County Health Department

Sarasota County Health Department offers clinics staffed with doctors and nurses that provide services including:

Eligibility

The following services are available to anyone: birth control, family planning, childhood immunizations, foreign travel immunizations, Healthy Start Program and confidential sexually transmitted disease (STD) testing, treatment and counseling.

WIC

 

(Women, Infants & Children)

 

WIC is a federal supplemental nutrition program for pregnant or postpartum women, breastfeeding women, infants and children up to age five who are at or below 185% of the federal poverty guidelines.

 

Qualified applicants receive nutrition counseling and a redeemable check for food, which may include cereal, eggs, fruit juice, milk, cheese, dried beans, peanut butter, carrots and/or tuna and in some cases, infant formula.

Healthy Start Program

 

Healthy Start screens pregnant women and newborn babies to identify risk factors for low birth weight and infant mortality. Healthy Start is free and available to everyone regardless of income.

 

A team of nurses, social workers, and peer counselors assist families in determining their needs and provide counseling, parenting support, childbirth and breastfeeding education, and smoking cessation services (classes in English and Español).

HIV/AIDS Services

 

The SCHD offers free and confidential HIV/AIDS testing and counseling.  Primary medical care and on-site laboratory services are available for HIV-positive individuals.  SCHD's Pharmacy can fill prescriptions for Medicaid, Ryan White, and Florida ADAP (AIDS Drug Assistance Program) clients.

 

The Specialty Clinic at the South County Community Clinic in Venice offers eligible clients health care, psychosocial care, and other services.  Services offered include Ryan White (Title II), AIDS Drug Assistance Program (ADAP), case management, and others.  Case management activities include assessment of a client's needs and personal support systems, development of a service plan, coordination of services to start plan and monitoring and periodic reevaluation of plan, including revision when necessary.

Uninsured Healthcare

 

The South County Community Clinic is dedicated to providing specialty care health services to uninsured, low-income residents of South Sarasota County to positively impact their health and quality of life. The clinic is staffed by local volunteer physicians, nurses, medical staff, and clerical support staff. This program serves South Sarasota County residents aged 19-64 who have a family income below 150% of the federal poverty level.

Veterans’ Services

 

SCHD staff help veterans enroll in drug prescription programs. Veterans Affairs medical care is available to honorably discharged veterans on a space-available basis. For service-disabled veterans, POWs, and Purple Heart recipients, medical care is available on a priority basis. Eligibility requires a DD214 (honorable discharge).

 

Sarasota County's Veteran Services unit provides assistance to veterans and their families with filing claims for veterans' benefits, help with Dependency Indemnity Compensation (DIC), and processing pension benefit claims.

Vision Screening

 

Free vision screening for adults is done on the 1st Thursday of each month from 8:30am to 12:30pm.  Screenings are performed by certified screeners.  Free eye glasses are available to those who qualify, provided usually within 60 days.
